Jonathan Fleming was convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of Darryl Rush, on Aug. 15, 1989, at the Williamsburg Houses.
His alibi was simple: He was in Orlando at the time of the shooting, on a family trip to Walt Disney World. During the trial, Mr. Fleming’s lawyers gave evidence showing that he was in Orlando around the time of the murder — plane tickets , a receipt, video footage and vacation photos from family members placed him out of town at the time of the crime.
A woman testified that she had seen him shoot Rush.
Later the eyewitness recanted her testimony soon after Fleming’s 1990 conviction, saying she had lied so police would cut her loose for an unrelated arrest, but Fleming lost his appeals.
In the ultimate act of injustice Jonathan would spend 24 Years…7 Months..and 20 Days in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Fleming finally won his freedom on April 8, 2014 after hiring private investigators to look into his case and find proof of his innocence.
Through it all Jonathan carries a message of appreciation for his second chance at life not bitterness. He now spends his days educating others about his story through motivational speaking and running an entertainment conglomerate.
He has been on countless major news outlets spreading the message thinking positively and giving back using his journey as a teaching tool to motivate not only the wrongfully accused, but also those who have faced major challenges in their life. Through perseverance and continuous faith you can overcome even the darkest of days…
